Older sources (for example, the 1911 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica) say that the Mersey starts at the confluence of the Goyt and the Etherow, in Marple. If you count Marple as being in Stockport (it is in the Metropolitan Borough) this would make "Etherow" an equally acceptable answer.
